Bakersfield records a median fixed broadband download speed of 352.25 Mbps, uploads near 31.22 Mbps and latency of 15 ms. These figures come from performance data tracked across the city and place local connections ahead of many mid-sized U.S. markets.

The numbers matter now because they underpin a tech scene that already counts more than 250 startups as of 2025. Those companies have generated $500 million in annual economic impact and more than 3,000 jobs. Reliable speeds allow founders to run cloud services, collaborate with remote teams and test data-heavy applications without leaving Kern County.

Provider Options That Support Growth

AT&T Fiber ranks as the top-rated service, delivering speeds up to 5,000 Mbps across roughly 77 percent of Bakersfield. Spectrum supplies cable coverage to between 73 and 92.8 percent of households with plans reaching 1,000 Mbps priced at $60 per month. T-Mobile and Verizon 5G home internet options advertise 300 to 415 Mbps depending on tower distance. Together the choices give most addresses at least two wired or wireless paths that meet or exceed the FCC baseline of 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload.

All households already have access to at least one plan meeting that federal threshold. The combination of speed, coverage and price keeps operating costs lower than in coastal California cities, an advantage cited by local tech recruiters when they compare Bakersfield with larger hubs.

New Fiber Build Aims for Full Coverage

Ripple Fiber has committed more than $60 million to bring 100 percent fiber service to nearly 50,000 homes across Kern County, beginning in Bakersfield. Construction started in early 2026 with commercial service scheduled for the first quarter of 2026. The project adds another high-capacity option that can scale to multi-gigabit residential and business use.

City officials have also noted ongoing talks with SiFi Networks for an additional open-access network, though those discussions remain separate from the Ripple rollout. Either expansion would increase redundancy for the startups already operating here.
