Bakersfield Infrastructure Work Advances on Multiple Fronts This Summer
Recent completions and ongoing projects include water mains on downtown streets and road upgrades along major highways.
How we reported this

California Water Service started construction in February 2026 on two downtown water infrastructure projects that installed 2,200 feet of new 10- and 8-inch water mains plus three fire hydrants on Wall and Service streets. Completion of the pipe work was expected in April 2026, with permanent paving scheduled for August 2026.
Interchange Upgrade Completed in May
The Thomas Roads Improvement Program funded a $27 million contract with Granite Construction to widen the bridge over SR 99 and build a new bridge spanning Wible Road at the SR 58/SR 99 interchange. That work finished in May 2026 as part of efforts to address pressure on older infrastructure from population growth and freight traffic.
H Street Corridor Improvements Under Way
Complete Streets improvements along the H Street Corridor between SR-58 and SR-204 are scheduled to begin in Spring 2026. The work, funded by the Active Transportation Program and Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program, includes a road diet, bike lane striping and lighting enhancements.
Caltrans Projects Add to Local Roadwork
Caltrans has seven major road projects totaling $450 million for reconstruction and rehabilitation along Highways 58 and 99. Named efforts include the Centennial Corridor Mainline, Beltway Operational Improvement and Bakersfield 99 Rehab, with some of those projects beginning in summer 2026.
Longer-Term Plan Guides Downtown Changes
The Downtown Corridor Enhancement Master Plan sets design guidelines for streetscape improvements and gateways. The plan supports reinvestment in downtown infrastructure over the next 30 years to improve walkability and attract new businesses.
