Bakersfield Launches New Medic Squad, Faster Rescues, Better Alerts

The Kern County Fire Department has officially launched Medic Squad 42, a permanent Advanced Life Support (ALS) unit stationed in east Bakersfield. The new unit replaces a temporary vehicle and is designed to serve an area that generates more than 5,000 emergency calls annually, according to the department.

Faster Response Times With New Rescue Units

Meanwhile, the Bakersfield City Fire Department has deployed two new rescue units at its busiest stations to cut down on response times across the city. Since their launch last Friday, these units have already handled 66 emergencies. While they provide basic life support rather than advanced care, their placement is intended to free up more specialized units for critical calls.

ReadyKern Emergency Alerts Get Accessibility Upgrades

Kern County has also upgraded its ReadyKern emergency alert system to make it more inclusive. The system now includes American Sign Language support, compatibility with Braille readers, and certified Spanish translations. County officials say the changes aim to ensure vulnerable community members can receive timely warnings during emergencies.

In another move to bolster quick response, the Kern County Fire Department is developing what it calls 'FireHawk' helicopters. These aircraft are being designed to improve air support for firefighting and rescue operations across Kern County, including around Bakersfield.

The City of Bakersfield has also provided residents with clear contact lines for storm-related issues. For blocked drains, the number is 326-3111; for downed trees, residents can call 326-3866. No active weather alerts are currently in effect, but officials encourage keeping these numbers handy for future storm events.
