Bakersfield Museum of Art Celebrates 70 Years Leading Region's Cultural Scene
As the region's sole institution of its kind, the museum celebrates its 70th anniversary with facility upgrades and expanded public access.
How we reported this
The Bakersfield Museum of Art (BMOA) is marking a significant milestone this year, celebrating its 70th anniversary. As the only art museum of its kind within approximately 100 miles of the region, the institution serves as a central hub for the visual arts in Bakersfield. This anniversary comes as the museum undertakes a comprehensive effort to enhance its infrastructure, ensuring it continues to serve the community for years to come.
Infrastructure and Accessibility Updates
Visitors to the museum will notice significant changes underway as the facility undergoes a major renovation. Construction efforts, which launched in late January 2026, are currently focused on the exterior entrance, the gallery layouts, and the classroom spaces. According to project timelines, these enhancements are expected to reach completion by the fall of 2026. These updates are intended to improve the overall visitor experience and support the museum's educational programs.
In addition to the physical improvements, the museum has adjusted its operational schedule to provide greater flexibility for the public. Starting February 1, 2026, the BMOA expanded its operating hours to include Sundays, with doors open from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. This change complements the existing Wednesday through Sunday operational model, allowing for increased access to exhibitions.
Current Exhibitions and Community Programs
The museum currently hosts a variety of summer programming. Among the exhibitions on display is 'Ann Diener: The Invented Land,' which is scheduled to de-install in August. Another featured exhibition, 'Resonantly Me,' showcases the work of 40 LGBTQ+ artists from across California and is available for viewing through September 7, 2025.
The institution has also strengthened its ties to other local cultural sites through a new reciprocal admission program. This initiative allows members of the BMOA to receive free access to the Kern County Museum, CALM, and the Buena Vista Museum. Likewise, members of those three institutions are granted free admission to the BMOA, a move designed to encourage deeper engagement with Bakersfield's wider cultural offerings. Those interested in planning a visit can look toward these established museum partnerships as a way to engage with the city’s broader historical and artistic landscape.
